What is Golf?

Golf is a sport where the player uses a metal club, typically on grass. The aim of the game is putting the golf ball into a series of holes in as few strokes as possible. Golf isn't a team sport, but participants will golf along side each other in friendly competition. A typical course will have 18 holes; who ever has the best score at the end of the 18th hole wins. This form of the game isn't for everyone, but there are other ways and places you can enjoy golf. For example; the driving range is a good place to practice your swing and work on your form. Alternatively, there is mini golf; which is similar to Golf in a lot of ways. It tends to have the same number of holes. However Mini Golf also includes shorter putting distance from player to hole; and obstacles like walls.

The History of Golfers Day

The game we recognize as golf originated in Scotland, somewhere in the 14th century. The earliest recorded reference to the game was a ban enacted by King James II in 1457; who thought that young men spent too much time golfing, and not enough time practicing archery! The first official “Golfers Day” was recognised in 1916, when the first ever professional Golfing tournament took place. This evolved into the PGA championship, which is an annual golf tournament conducted by the Professional Golfers' Association of America. It is one of the four men's major championships in professional golf.
