More about Branded Moleskine Notebooks
Modern day branded Moleskine notebooks are a descendant of a notebook that went out of production long ago. The original was a small black book; with blank ivory pages, rounded corners and bound in oilskin cloth. Used by many of the greatest artists and thinkers of the last two centuries, including Vincent Van Gogh; Ernest Hemingway and (slightly) more recently, Bruce Chatwin.
Chatwin talks of the original in his book “The Songlines”, mourning the loss of the small French company that produced them. They had gone out of business in 1986. Chatwin favoured these books and he bought as many of the remaining stock as he could. (It was never enough!)
In 1997, a small Italian publisher called Modo&Modo resurrected the style. They manufactured small black notebooks with beautiful ivory pages, rounded corners; bound with a smooth black material. They also included the original features of a ribbon page marker and expandable folder at the back).
The company trademarked the name “Moleskine” and marketed them for creatives and travellers worldwide. “For the nomads.” They also opted to sell them in bookshops as well as stationary stores; because they’re not just blank journals and notebooks, they’re stories just waiting to be written.
